Preventing Water Damage in the Bathroom

The frequent use of water in the bathroom makes it extremely vulnerable for moist accumulation and potential water damage. By inspecting it regularly, you can reduce water related damages.

Bathtub and Shower

The shower and bathtub require special attention and maintenance. Check the tiles and replace if cracked. Make sure that there is no missing grout between the tiles. Inspect and replace cracked caulking at joints where the walls meet the floor or the bathtub. Clogged drains and pipes problems will prevent the bathtub from drying and may indicate serious problems beneath the bathtub. Consult with a professional immediately to prevent structural damage. Towel Warmers and Rails

Bathrooms of all shapes and sizes including ensuite, cloakroom or main, can usually accommodate a towel warmer. Towel warmers themselves come in various sizes, some of which can actually replace old and tied radiators that connect to your central heating system directly. Towel warmers also come as electric only or dual fuel. Whichever one suits your bathrooms heating system you can be sure that a warm, dry towel is a great feeling on a winters night.

Heated Flooring Tile System

Traditional bathroom tile flooring is often considered to be cold and not very inviting during the winter months. I had to play a joke on the maid at a hotel where I was staying. You know that little paper wrapper they place over the toilet seat, that thin paper band that is supposed to convince you that the facility is clean. You normally take the paper band off and throw it away when you go to use the john. Instead, I saved mine and each morning before leaving the room slipped it back on the toilet seat, giving the impression I never used it.

After day five of this I could only imagine the maid?s reaction.

Staring, she said, ?What are you, some kind of a lizard??

To me, bathrooms are like Greek temples, made of stone and cool marble, reassuring, serene, little worlds of their own, a place of refuge, shut away from the world and its problems.

Such places thus earn the more dignified name of ?rest room.?

For example, if you hate your dead-end job, and you share a communal bathroom down the hall with the employees of other companies in the building, chances are you?ll spend more time here than you should, away from a threatening, dishonest boss, ringing phones and mountains of paperwork.

I admit I?m selfish. When I use the communal john, I want it all to myself—alone.

I also don?t want my imitation Greek temple sullied. Therefore, I never perform major bodily functions here (the only time I ever did I was sick).

There?s this guy. Every morning at 8:45 a.m. he?s seated on the throne. Now, I fully know this is not a common subject for a column, and I don?t want you to think I?m strange. But I?m truly curious about this guy, perplexed, baffled, whatever.

Since it?s only 8:45 in the morning, he can?t have been at work very long, not much more than an hour. Why can?t he hold it longer? Why can?t he do his disgusting business at home before he comes to work?

What does he do, process food like a goose?

Now, we all drink coffee, which I admit goes through you pretty fast. So I?m not against use of the john for small calls of nature. But I?m thinking of posting a sign, which reads, ?This Facility Used for Minimal Body Functions Only.?

Don?t foul my Greek temple with your digesting bowels.

More bathroom palacial.

Bathrooms like restaurants should be rated in travel books as to how good they are. For instance, we?ve all seen gas station bathrooms in truck stops on Labor Day where the unflushed facility hasn?t been cleaned and the globs of stuff in there are so putrid you think they may reach out and grab you.

Such places assign us lower on the scale of evolution.

Disgusting!

Then there are bathrooms like the one I saw at Pebble Beach Resort. The heart soars. You could eat off the floor. Little, moist cloth towels hanging from silver trays for cleaning your hands. Embossed toilet paper. Gleaming brass and silver fixtures.

A dream come true.

I was in tears.

If you are thinking of remodeling your bathroom and redoing or adding showers to them, consider all of your choices. The age we live in has allowed us many choices in what we want in our homes. We can choose from high end, high quality items to comfortable old favorites. When looking to redo or install a shower in your bathroom, you have many things to consider.

Start by knowing the size of the area you wish to install the shower. Or, if you have a previous shower already installed, removing the old will tell you whether any of the existing elements there will need to be repaired or replaced. Consider where the drains are located and how stable the flooring is. Once this information is obtained, you can move onto the design stages.

Taking a trip to the nearest home improvement store will give you many ideas. Don’t want to leave the house? Check online stores and even specialty stores that can give you many, many choices. Bathroom showers come in many shapes and sizes and are made from different qualities of materials. Consider whether you want to have an open area surrounded by walls or more of a bathroom shower stall which is more enclosed with a door. Some very nice ones can be made out of stone and ceramics. Others, more commonly used, are made from steal or plastics. Finding what suits you needs and tastes is important. Remember to keep in mind the costs and the installation fees if you will not be installing it yourself.

Now you have the bathroom shower installed. Looks great right? Did you consider shower curtains to match the bathroom? You can find many designs at a department store of your choice. Bathroom shower curtains are easy to find and in most cases an inexpensive way to provide privacy. Or, perhaps, you shower has shower doors? Doors can be a great way to keep the water in the shower itself. Doors made of glass will be much heavier then those made of plastics, but either choice will come with a film like surface to allow some privacy.
